Distance Learning Programs

What Universities offer distance learning programs? Boston Architectural College advertises their program, but are there other programs?

What University programs cater to working professionals?

I've started my own companies and want to continue my education, but I am unable to dedicate myself to a full-time program.  It is my intent to develop my contracting business into a design/build collaboration with architects and other design professionals.  Earning my masters will, in my opinion, bridge the gap between contractors and architects and increase my marketability with potential clients.

Based upon your experience with the profession, does this sound like a viable approach?

The only institutions that I am aware are Boston Architectural College, Lawrence Technological University (Detroit, MI) and Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA).  I do not think any of them are exclusively online, but it is a start.  I would seriously consider BAC as they value work experience, but typically you must be eligible for IDP - working for an architect, I think.

Sorry, I do not have insight on that but very few cater to working professionals.

Do you need to be an architect to continue your company?  Would it be worth to attend a true MArch with an emphsis in design/build?  Research the following - not accredited architecture degree but focuses on design-build.

If your company is a contracting business, do you need an accredited architecture degree?  If you wish to connect with architects, you have an architecture degree and can talk the talk.  Think about what skills you need to develop and pursue the appropriate degree.  Talk with professionals that do what you want to do -- what education do they have?

Next Step to Becoming an Architect

I would like to ask for your suggestion in my story and which direction I should head:

 

2001: I graduated with a BS in Architecture (pre-professional) from Univ of Michigan. I then immediately spent the next 8 years gaining tons of experience for IDP credit.

 

2005 and 2006: I started a Masters program in Arch and was enrolled part time with 12 credits total.

 

On and off the years I have been working with firms and did not complete a Masters as of yet due to personal issues and work.  After 2009 I stopped working with firms and started freelancing due to the economy, while keeping IDP active.  I am unemployed now and would by all means like to go back to school and finish my Masters.

 

But it is not financially feasible to go to school full time, perhaps yes to part time but in the state of Florida, of course you need to have a professional degree from a NAAB accredited school.

 

Any suggestions for a candidate wanting to start taking ARE exams but cannot until complete Masters but cannot afford due to economy!

 

(But still keep and actively pay renewal for IDP over the years since 2001)

I will assume that you wish to still become an architect.

Given that you have the pre-professional BS in Architecture, you may wish to consider the Distance MArch at the Boston Architectural College (BAC) - http://www.the-bac.edu/education-programs/school-of-architecture/distance-master-of-architecture -

As I understand it, you visit Boston 6-8 days each semester and the rest is taught online from where you live and work.  Obviously, this may take a shift in your thinking, but worth a look.  LTU (Lawrence Technological University) also has a online MArch - http://www.ltu.edu/architecture_and_design/marchonline.asp -- Again, worth a look.

Another option is to pursue licensure in one of the few states that only requires a pre-professional degree but that would limit your options in other states that require an accredited degree.

Bottom line, you need to determine your obstacles -- finances, personal, work -- and find ways to persist and overcome them.  Also, try to avoid self-talk - "unemployed."  Do not define yourself by a government term.

Distance/Online Master of Architecture?

I started my college career at Clemson University in the Architecture program. In my sophomore year I veered off course and ended up switching to Marketing. I graduated with a Major in Marketing and minor in Architecture. After 10 years in an accidental career in Commercial banking and starting a family, I really want to get a M Arch and get back on course.  The issue is that I live in the beautiful coastal town of Wilmington, NC. Far far from my beloved Clemson and more than 2 hours from the closest school with an Arch program. Are there any accredited Distance Learning/Online M Arch programs?  Thanks in advance for your time.

It will be almost impossible to complete your Master of Architecture (first professional accredited degree) via distance learning.  Below are two previous replies to parallel questions. 

As you can see, the Boston Architectural College and Lawrence Technological University offer distance Master of Architecture degrees but they are for individuals with the pre-professional degree only not for those with a degree in another discipline.

From my view of the map, the closest degree program would be NC State in Raleigh, NC - http://design.ncsu.edu/academic-programs/architecture/march

I am sorry there are any direct online programs targeted for you; perhaps, you can rethink what you wish to do within architecture such that does not require a degree but allows you to gain a position within a firm.  Given your degree in Marketing, you would be quite helpful in a firm.

Online Architecture Courses

I am a licensed general contractor and a certified building official (building inspector). I have providing construction management services for the last 12 years in which I also testified as an expert in construction defect litigation cases. My back ground in construction is in building envelope weather and waterproofing 10 years. Now I want to get my Architectural degree but do not have time during the day. Do you have any information regarding online courses you can share with me?

First, congrats on your decision to pursue an architecture degree.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to gain an entire architectural degree via online courses. Two institutions have the closest -- Boston Architectural College and Lawrence Technological University. Some other programs may have a few courses online, but it will be almost impossible to gain an architecture degree without taking in-person classes.

New Career in Architecture

I am currently working in the offshore oil and gas field in Louisiana as an automation engineer. I have a bachelors in electrical engineering from the University of New Orleans, but I have always been interested in pursuing a career in Architecture. With the current state of the Gulf of Mexico and the oil and gas industry in general, I am considering steps toward a career change. The biggest issue is that I am 34 and have a house and family to support. Are there programs through accredited universities or colleges that offer online classes in architecture? I would imagine that credits from my current degree would transfer and I would have to physically be present in some situations, but I'm trying to see whats available and looking for a path forward. I appreciate any help or advice you could give.

To become an architect, you need to obtain a professional accredited degree in architecture. As you have an undergraduate degree, you are eligible to pursue the accredited Master of Architecture (3-4 years). For a list, visit the following:

Online Architecture Courses

I am really interested in becoming an architect. I use to go college and started taking some classes but mostly got my Gen Ed done and ended up joining the army. I will be deploying in aug for a year. My question is while I'm deployed do you know of any schools that I can take online that will help me get closer to becoming an architect? And if so would it be harder to get a job with an online degree since there's no studio time? If you can help me with this I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Given the nature of the discipline of architecture, there are limited opportunities to take courses online. The Boston Architectural College does offers a Distance MArch, but an individual must have a preprofessional degree (B.S. in Architecture or equivalent).
